DAY-58, HASSI MESSAOUD, ALGERIA, 14TH OF AUG'09, 23.44 HRS

JANMASHTAMI !!!

I remember the childhood days when my Papa was posted in BCCL and we were staying in company quarters in Koyala Nagar, Dhanbad. Dhanbad a coal belt area was a district in Bihar state during that time but now it is a part of Jharkhand State. My childhood spent into this City city enriched in Coal which got extracted from lot of underground mines in around Dhanbad, these mines are controlled by Coal India Limited and whose subsdiary is BCCL. The whole City is influenced by a Bengali culture due to proximity with West Bengal.

We use to celebrate all the festivals with fervour and gaiety. Always waiting that one or other festival should come so that we celebrate on our own limit.

Still remembering with start of year we use to Celebrate at large scale Puja by collecting "Chanda" Donation and installing Statue of Ma Saraswati. During Ramnavami we use to sharpen our skill in "Laathi yudh" or sword fight. As the days passes time come for "Jhoolan" the birth of Sri Krishna which celebrated as Janmashtami in whole India and in different part of world where Indian lives.

Normally we start preparation for the decoration of "Jhoolan" quite in advance. Collection of different size of rocks and pebbles which we arrange in such a form which gives impression of mountain and valleys then next our act will be to make this rocky mountain a complete green. We go to our lawn and scoop away the grass tiles in square form for which always get scold from the elders. So, now this green grass tiles cover the whole rocky mountain uniformly and our next task was to habitat the whole valley areas with the modern civilization. A full proof planning we do and make the streets, drainage system, houses, street light, School, Colleges, traffic signals, black top road, birds, animals, shops, market, bank and etc. This all came to our tiny mind about a town planning and once this work get over. Very precisely in between the city we fix a Swing "Jhoola" on which "Radhe Krishna " Statue get installed.

On the Janmashtami day we all keep fast and await till mid night when Lord Krishna too birth and we celebrate this moment with Aarti and pooja and swinging "Jhoola".

It may seems play during childhood but it left a significant remark on the child's memory which we learnt while carrying out Sacred Puja of Lord Krishna.

Krishna symbol of love, symbol of abundant knowledge who was more a human being then a Lord. He is now worshipped across the continent and still we do fasting and puja on Janmashtami and go in flash back of my memory of my childhood celebrations.

You too share your memories if you wish....

Have a very good night.

With love and warm regards,

Manoj Kumar Ojha
